Through funding from USAID, the Lebanon Education Assistance for Development (LEAD) program is improving the educational environment in the public schools through upgraded infrastructure, equipment, and supplies. The program focuses on renovating schools in need of repair, providing computer and science labs to public schools, and supporting the expansion of after-school activities by building the capacity of school staff and headmasters with the ultimate goal of promoting community involvement and improving the learning environment.
Since 1998, Access to Microfinance and Enhanced Enterprise Niches (Ameen s.a.l.) has been providing microenterprise and home improvement loans in partnership with four private commercial banks in Lebanon. AMEEN has become one of the largest microfinance providers in Lebanon, continuing its commitment to bring commercial capital down to its low-income populations who are underserved by traditional financial markets. In 2008, Ameen was ranked the top microfinance institution in Lebanon by the MIX network.
The TAMKIN program, which means "empowerment" in Arabic, is helping to strengthen capacity of local municipalities, improve service delivery, and promote integrated and participatory planning. The goal of TAMKIN is to transform municipalities in Lebanon into effective agents for leading local socio-economic development through democratic engagement with the private sector and citizenry.
The Lebanon Apple Production Improvement (LAPI) is promoting economic development in the apple producing areas of Mount Lebanon, Bekaa, and North Lebanon. The goal of the program is to improve the living situation of the apple growers in particular and the agricultural sector in general through improved, higher quality produce and increased income through the production of higher quality fruit. By developing a mechanism for quality control and food safety, the program is promoting apple production and empowering owners of agricultural holdings through training in and access to good agricultural practices and production techniques to enable them to produce fruit for domestic and foreign markets.
