Craft Expert Shares Knowledge with Georgian Artisans
Cindy Owings | VIP Assignment, June-July 2006
In the Republic of Georgia an unemployment rate of nearly 13% means that over half of the population is living below the poverty line. With few economic opportunities available, individuals are attempting to turn a hobby like creating handicrafts products, into items for sale. Georgians utilize materials available in their regions, such as wool and clay, to create items including pottery, knitted boots and rugs. CHF International has recognized the value of this economic opportunity. In partnership with local non-governmental organizations, CHF is working with these individuals to provide business training. With the proper training, these individuals will be able to turn the hobby of creating handicrafts into an income generating enterprise.
With 20 years of experience in selling her own handicrafts products, Cindy Owings knows the difficulties faced by artisans trying to develop their products and market. Drawing from her expertise as a textile artist, Cindy traveled to Georgia in July to assess the handicraft sector. Having gained experience from running her own design and manufacturing company for 21 years, she was driven to transfer her knowledge to assist Georgians and their local organizations.
While in Georgia, Cindy shared her experience through photos and lessons from her own textile design business. This real life example of a true entrepreneurial venture served to motivate the Georgian artisans. Her story demonstrated that it is indeed possible for them to achieve success in the handicraft sector and improve their way of living. She then led numerous workshops and trainings on techniques for dyeing raw wool, felting and yarn spinning. Building upon these skills trainings, Cindy worked with local artisans regarding business development and brainstorming better marketing methods.
It was a grand adventure traveling to remote villages, eating delicious food, meeting talented artisans, sharing my own business and textile knowledge and soaking up a culture rich in diverse history!”
--Cindy Owings
Throughout her time in Georgia, Cindy emphasized how the skill of local Georgian artisans provides great potential for further economic development. Through sharing her expertise, Cindy was able to carry out the mission of CHF International by serving as a catalyst for change in this developing nation. Her work in Georgia will continue as she and CHF International maintain this relationship and support for the handicrafts sector.
