Improving Community Prepardeness for Disasters
CHF International began operating in Indonesia in 2004, after the South Asian earthquake and tsunami devastated Aceh Province, and has since expanded its programs by responding to natural and manmade disasters in other parts of the country. With a proactive approach to emergency response, CHF provides short-term interventions in targeted communities to accelerate the transition from relief to recovery, while enhancing capacity of communities to respond to disasters and manage the risk of future disasters, such as flooding, earthquakes, tsunami, as well as political conflict and disease outbreaks.
CHF's specific activities in this sector leverage local partnerships, encourage national- and local-level dialogue about preparedness, and provide a range of direct services in post-disaster settings such as:
- emergency medical assistance;
- commodity distribution;
- micro-grants and asset restoration;
- temporary and transitional shelters; and
- community-based disaster risk reduction awareness and education activities.
When an earthquake struck Indonesia close to Padang, West Sumatra on September 20th 2009, CHF’s Emergency Response Team quickly provided shelter assistance using our proven transitional shelter model. This model provides a cost effective way of ensuring that people who have lost their homes are provided with a shelter than can last up to two years while they rebuild their permanent homes. CHF International was awarded $1.85 million from USAID’s Office of Development Assistance to construct these shelters for 500 households and rehabilitate infrastructure using local labor, leading to income generation for devastated families.
